Description

Any cell therapy effort based the use of stem cells needs to make sure that there is no risk of oncogenic transformation in the cells used as therapeutical agents therefore ensuring biosafety.

It has been recently suggested that the aberrant alteration of the mechanisms that control tissue homeostasis on stem cells may be the origin of tumors. Therefore investigating the role fo stem cells in cancer we will get insight into controlling the growth of stem cells being used in therapy.

The program on Cancer defines a transversal line through the other disease oriented programs towards understanding the mechanisms of stem cell transformation with an interest in biosaftey. As a starting point the program is focused on breast cancer and mammary stem cells as experimental model.
